About The Divergent Space
The Divergent Space is a specialist neurodivergent service in Skipton, North Yorkshire, and online, founded by Dr Helen Gowling and Dr Becky Hull. Both founders are neurodivergent themselves, and set up the service out of frustration with the deficit-based model of neurodevelopmental conditions — working instead from a neurodiversity-affirmative standpoint. Whether someone comes for a diagnostic assessment or for therapy, the aim is to develop, collaboratively, a shared understanding of their strengths, differences and challenges.
Autism, ADHD and combined assessments are offered to people aged 17 and over, starting with a screening appointment covering both autism and ADHD experiences, the fee for which is deducted from the price of any full assessment that follows. Clients complete a sensory questionnaire beforehand, receive a summary of topics in advance, can bring a family member or friend, and have the appointment adapted to their comfort. Full assessments are either psychologist-led or multidisciplinary. As a psychology-led service it does not prescribe; its recommendations focus on strategies and adjustments, and it signposts to prescribing services where medication is wanted.
The associate team includes clinical and counselling psychologists, speech and language therapists, occupational therapists and specialist counsellors, all experienced in neurodivergence, offering 1-to-1 therapy, post-diagnostic counselling and coaching alongside training and events. The Skipton clinic, opened in August 2023 within walking distance of the high street, was renovated with the sensory needs of its clients in mind, and photos of the environment are available in advance. Appointments are also offered remotely across the UK.
