A small new study asks neurodivergent shoppers what they actually want from retail
A study published in the Scientific Papers of Silesian University of Technology in 2026 by Gębarowski, Wiater, and Wróblewska at the Krakow University of Economics did something the retail literature rarely does: it asked neurodivergent people directly what they want from the shops they use. The method was in-depth interviews analysed thematically, and the honest first thing to say about it is that the sample is tiny — five people, with profiles spanning autism, ADHD, dyslexia, migraine, and PTSD. This is exploratory work, directional rather than definitive, and the authors say as much. It would not carry a strong claim on its own.
What makes it worth attention is not the weight of the finding but the shape of it, and the quiet contradiction sitting inside the paper’s own recommendations.
Three themes emerged. Crowding and unwanted bodily proximity produced overwhelm. Intrusive sales staff — the forced sample, the approach before the shopper had even entered properly — produced a sense of violation. And warm, opt-in, non-intrusive service, most often found in small shops rather than malls, produced the rare experience of a pleasant transaction. On the surface this is intuitive, even familiar. Underneath the first theme, though, the other two point at something sharper than “neurodivergent people find shops stressful.”
The clearest finding is not about noise — it is about who controls the interaction
The most consistent thread across all five interviews was not sensory based at all. It was control over the initiation of contact. The recurring grievance was not that staff existed, or even that shops were loud, but that interaction was imposed rather than offered — the assistant who descends, the “how can I help you?” that compels a reply, the sample pushed into the hand. What the respondents described wanting was not less service. It was opt-in service: the autonomy to decide when, whether, and how an interaction begins.
That distinction matters more than the crowding finding, because it relocates the problem from the person’s nervous system to the environment’s defaults. A shop calibrated for the majority treats forced, proactive interaction as good service — friendly, attentive, the mark of a well-run floor. For the neurodivergent shopper, the same behaviour reads as intrusion, because it removes control over the one variable they most need to hold. The discomfort is then attributed to their sensitivity, when what actually happened is that the environment defaulted to a mode of contact built for someone else and gave them no way to decline it. The autonomy theme isn’t a sensory accommodation request. It’s a request to stop having interaction done to them.
This is why small shops kept coming up as the positive case. It wasn’t the size. It was that smaller settings happened to offer what the respondents wanted structurally: contact that was voluntary, paced by the customer, declinable without friction. The good experience was the one where the shopper held the initiative.
The retail floor is the workplace argument in miniature
Anyone following The Neurodiversity Directory’s neurodiversity in the workplace coverage will recognise the move, because it is the same one in a new room. The workplace argument is that the environment is the variable, not the worker — that what gets coded as a neurodivergent employee’s difficulty is usually the friction of a setting designed end to end for a different cognitive default. The retail floor runs the identical logic at smaller scale. The shop’s defaults — proactive service, ambient density, interaction on the staff’s timing rather than the customer’s — are calibrated for the majority and experienced as intrusion by the minority, whose discomfort is then read as their fragility rather than the floor’s design.
The continuity is worth naming because it shows the pattern isn’t domain-specific. Whether the setting is a team, an office, or a supermarket aisle, the structure repeats: an environment built around one profile, a mismatch experienced by another, and an attribution that lands the mismatch inside the person as pathology. The same square peg, a different hole.
What the retail framing adds is the consumer-economy twist — the paper is candid that neurodivergent shoppers represent a vast market, and the interest in “neuroinclusion” is at least partly an interest in their spending. Inclusion justified by purchasing power rather than dignity is its own quiet thing, and it shapes which solutions get reached for.
The tell in the recommendations — half fix the shop, half try to fix the shopper
Here is where the paper, without noticing, documents the deeper pattern. Its recommendations split cleanly into two kinds. One kind moves the environment: quiet hours, quiet zones, staff trained in non-intrusive, opt-in service, and visible signage so a shopper can orient to the rules — these is basic environmental design that benefits all neurotypes and peoples. These are all sound, and they follow directly from what the respondents said they wanted — control, and a setting that grants it.
The other kind moves the person — and that is the tell. Alongside the environmental fixes, the paper proposes virtual-reality systems and “serious games” to train autistic people to function as independent customers, rehearsing the shopping trip in a controlled simulation until they can better tolerate the real one.
Sit with the asymmetry of that for a second. The environment has just been described as intrusive, overwhelming, and calibrated for someone else — and one half of the proposed remedy is to leave that environment intact and train the neurodivergent person to withstand it. The paper diagnoses a structural problem with one hand and hands it back to the individual with the other, and never registers the contradiction between the two moves.
This is the accommodation-as-alibi pattern in its purest form. The structural fix and the individual fix sit side by side as if equivalent, but they are not. The environmental changes alter the thing that produced the difficulty. The training does not — it concedes, tacitly, that the floor will stay intrusive and the burden of adapting will remain the shopper’s, now dressed as empowerment. “We’ll train you to cope with it” is what gets offered when “we’ll change it” feels too expensive, and the VR headset makes the offer look like progress or innovation rather than what it is: the unchanged environment, plus homework for the person it wasn’t built for.
None of which makes the study worthless — its central insight, that autonomy over initiation (i.e. individual sovereignty) matters more than ambient noise, is genuinely useful and under-recognised, and the small sample is honestly flagged. But the most instructive thing in it is the one the authors didn’t intend. Even sympathetic neuroinclusion research, asking the right people the right questions, still reaches reflexively for fixing the shopper when fixing the shop is the thing the shoppers actually asked for. The question worth carrying out of it is the one the recommendations dodge: if the shoppers told you the floor was the problem, why is half the solution still aimed at them?
